The police were useless. It was the same story every time I went. Brodyâs friend tried to help, but unfortunately, there was nothing they could do until there was evidence Chace had committed a crime, and him knowing what went on inside my apartment at night apparently didnât warrant any cause for concern. Jeremy wasnât too impressed, and I was running out of ideas to keep Chace away.
âYou need a lawyer,â Jeremy said as we walked to my car.
âI canât afford a good one. Chace has money. Lots of it. Iâm worried if it went to court, heâd win.â
âHe couldnât possibly win.â He took the keys from me and ushered me around to the passenger side.
âIâm not willing to risk it. Not yet.â
âWell, itâs bullshit.â
âI know. But at least uni starts back in a week.â
âSo?â Jeremy started the car and backed out of the parking lot.
âSo, Chace will have to go back to school. Itâll make it harder for him to harass me if heâs living three hours away.â I pointed him in the direction of Ryderâs house so we could go and see Cole.
I was nervous about Cole meeting him officially. Heâd seen him a few times at the roadhouse, but they never really interacted, and I wasnât sure how things would go. I was worried Cole wouldnât like him because that would mean any feelings I may have had toward Jeremy would immediately become irrelevant, and I knew that would be too hard to cope with. He was quickly becoming a big part of my life, even after only a few days. There was something about him that drew me in.
âAnd until then?â
âUntil then, Cole can stay with Ryder, and once Iâm convinced Chace has left town, Iâll bring my baby home. Itâs only a few days.â
Jeremy grunted in response and didnât say anything else about it. âOkay, so tell me what Cole likes.â
âWhat? Why?â
âBecause first impressions count, and if I want to keep spending time with his mumma, I need to make sure he likes me.â Jeremy smiled, and my heart melted at his words.
âYou want to keep spending time with me?â I grinned.
âI havenât got you out of your pants yet, so yeah.â
I punched him in the arm. âAnd if that happens, then what? Youâll get bored and move on.â I swallowed thickly at the thought that if I gave in to my feelings and things actually progressed that Jeremy might just get over it and find someone else to âspend timeâ with.
âNot likely. Once I get you out of those pants, babe, I doubt Iâd let you put them back on. In fact, I think I might burn them all to be safe.â
I raised an eyebrow and didnât say a word because Jeremy had just pulled the car into Ryderâs driveway.
We climbed out of the car and walked up the path. Jeremy was fidgeting beside me, straightening his shirt and brushing his hair out of his face. âDo I look okay?â he asked.
I chuckled and patted his arm.
